Textiles
A 5 by 8 foot wool rug, hand-knotted rather than tufted. The pile is tied into the warp instead of glued to a backing, which is the difference between decades and a few years.

01 — The construction
Tufted rugs are punched through a cloth and glued. The glue dries out, the rug sheds and it dies in about five years. A knotted rug has no adhesive in it at all.
02 — The wool
Wool fibres are coated in lanolin, so liquid beads before it soaks. Blot a spill quickly and there is nothing to clean.
03 — The placement
A 5 x 8 under a sofa should take the front legs of the seating, not float in the middle. That is what makes a room look anchored rather than sparse.
